Mahlathini & The Mahotella Queens - I’m In Love With A Rastaman

This is perhaps the most distinct of all South African music genres. It was formed in the 60s as rural Zulus started to experiment with the musical genres they came across in the cities, including kwela, marabi and early jazz, with traditional Zulu melodies and styles.

The rest of the world’s knowledge of mbhaqanga is probably limited to the few cameos it makes on Paul Simon’s Graceland album.

Sadly, the story of mbhaqanga is not always this happy - the most prominent artist Mahlathini (Simon Nkabinde) died penniless after being ruthlessly exploited by white-owned record label companies in apartheid South Africa.
